Backyard Sports was created in late 1991 as Kidlympics, which would've been a slightly kid-friendly opposite to Pepper Ann's YM comics at the time. The original 4 main stars of the Kidlympics were Pablo, Dmitri, Jocinda, and Angela. Lisa was the main antagonist of Kidlympics. A special aired on CBS in 1992.
During production of the special, Kidlympics was caught with controversy, because of how it promoted the Barcelona Summer Olympics in 1992 so much. Mark Peyser, the lead character designer of the special, stated in a 1997 interview with Hollywood Star that "he wasn't expecting that the animated kid stars were very popular on television back in 1992, but the FCC hated the idea of a kids' show promoting the Olympics very often, so he and Sue Rose have to tone the series down." The series was renamed to Kidz Luv Sports in 1994 (years before the release of Baseball Kids on the CD-i in 1996), Junior Sports in 1997, and Backyard Sports in early 1998 (started using since One Saturday Morning era).
